Epoxy for Architects

   Türkçe terminoloji sözlüğü sayfanın altındadır.

What is the Epoxy?

Epoxy is a termoset plastic material that is able to change its state, liquid to solid. It is being used in many sector such as aviation, construction. Today, we will learn it, and will be know  it enough to use in our projects.

Plastic is a general term for elastomer, thermoset, and thermoplastic polymers. Their differences are, basicly;

Elastomer polymers are very elastic plastics, they can be stretched at least two times of original length!

Thermoset polymers can NOT being melted&reshaped again, but in beginning, they can be shaped and become solid. By the way, they become solid by heating.

Thermoplastic polymers can be used again and again by melting and reshaping. They become solid by cooling.

Where to use Epoxy?

  1. As Surface Sealer
  2. As Surface Dye
  3. Filling the cracks on a surface

Types of Epoxy

There are lots of types of epoxy application, depends on the aim of application(heavy loaded area, just for esthetics etc.). It can be applicated at least 2mm thickness. For heavy loaded surfaces like airports, hangars etc. maybe should use layered epoxy. Layered epoxy application’s thickness could be 20 mm. As you can understand from its name, it consists of lots of layers of epoxy, therefore, it become more durable towards heavy loads.

Self levelling epoxy is self-consolidating, that means, it could be useful when we need really hygienic floors.

  1. Standard Epoxy
  2. Self Levelling Epoxy
  3. Multilayered Epoxy

ADVANTAGES

  • Hygienic, anti-bacterial : can be used in hospitals
  • Anti-dust and smooth surface : hygienic and always shining
  • Durable towards friction, abrasion, strikes : could be used in airports, factories, stores etc.
  • Durable for chemicals
  • Easy Cleaning
  • Fast Application
  • Waterproofing
  • Fireproofing
  • Esthetics, different texture options

DISADVANTAGES

  • Relatively High Initial Investment Cost
  • Relatively High Labour Cost
  • Unhealthy : if it consists solvent, but don’ t worry, there are also epoxies free-solvent.
  • Does not allow moisture to escape(means rigid)
