The Importance of Collage and Diagram

Collages and diagrams are recording and reminder tools in a way. With them, we freeze our ideas that emerged in our mind and to be able to remind them, we transform them to the form of collage or diagram. So, lets look these two tools in more detailed.
Ideas can be liken to the sparks emerging with the friction of woods after a long time. We think for hours and hours and an idea comes suddenly, becomes a light in our darkness. In that moment, first spark had emerged. If we get into a panic, we would lose them and we would have to think again. But the collages and diagrams, can be used for recording the abruptly emerging images/ideas. By recording our ideas as collage/ diagram, we would be able to take these ideas to improve our design. Well, how this recording mechanism works? Why writing the ideas easily on a paper is inadequate sometimes?
Our brain creates numerous relations and bonds between the parts and attempts to create a consistent totality, just like an algorithm trying to break a password by trying all the probable combinations of numbers. Ideas are tiny satisfactorinesses created in this process of brain. These ideas are in our mind with their totality of identities. Because they were born in the atmosphere of mind,therefore, they can live better there. However our mind keeps trying to find new ideas, creating new bonds; and thats why we should find a new home for our born ideas. We should record our ideas to make live them longer. While recording, there will be some losses from the essence of the idea, this is because, idea’s home was the mind atmosphere. These losses are the pain of migration from the mind atmosphere to the physical atmosphere. The reason of these losses, in mind atmosphere there are numerous bonds between thoughts, ideas, past, present etc.; but in physical world there are less showable relations between them. In order to minimise the losses, we should record our ideas with a suitable tool. At this point, collages and diagrams could help us.
Why we need collage and diagram methods, while we are able to just easily writing the ideas? This is because, all ideas have not same typical characteristics, all of them require different recording methods that suitable for their essences. In design process, we work on different kinds of relations among volumes, culture, needs, desires, context etc. All these tryings actually are different experiments in a way. To get ahead in design process, we choose the most ideal experiments that could be work for our goals. To be able to understand which experiments could be work, we have to record them properly in the beginning. For example, if we draw a square to remind ourselves the volume of a cube, what a fault it is, right?
We should explore which method will be the most proper method for our idea, sometimes we dream a volume, sometimes we think about the context of the building, its users, its functions, its symbolic meanings and all of these elements’ relational totality, how they will run together to make this project awesome? To record these kinds of questionings and ideas, we need collages and diagrams. Not just them, we need also building models, taking photographes, making some videos, draw some pictures, poeticize our dreams … We need all of them, because, we are designing a life in that building; and in life there are scale factor, composition, poetry, art, colours, volumes..
We are designers, always new ideas and potentials come in our mind, we have to look after them, because, they make us a designer. In this world, ideas are contending, ideas dominating, ideas losing. We have to learn how to protect and develop our ideas. This is also one of the answers of why everyone need to spend some time in architecture schools.
Besides, these recording methods have another ability for us: not just protecting, also developing the ideas. When we reach a point of satisfaction, we are looking our idea always from that point and perspective. But if we bring it into the physical world by recording, we can catch different things about that idea by looking it from different perspectives, in different times, in different moods.
Due to all these reasons, recording methods are significant assistants for us. Our relation with them is tence and reciprocating, and no one knows the legal owner of the end result except us. Because, we always assert ourselves in the designer role.
Kolaj ve Diyagramların Önemi(Same Article in Turkish)
Kolajlar ve diyagramlar birer kayıt ve hatırlatma araçlarıdırlar. Bu iki kayıt yöntemi ile zihnimizde beliren fikirleri dondururuz ve tekrar hatırlayabilmek adına bu fikirleri kolaj ve diyagram formuna geçiririz. Haydi bu iki aracı detaylıca inceleyelim.
Fikirler odunların birbirine saatlerce sürtünmesi sonrası bir anda ortaya çıkan kıvılcım gibidirler. Saatlerce bir konuya odaklanırız ve düşünür düşünür dururuz ve bir anda karanlığımız aydınlanır. İlk kıvılcım çıkmıştır. Eğer o esnada paniklersek kıvılcımı kaybederiz ve tekrar düşünmemiz gerekir, tekrar kıvılcım çıkması için. Kolajlar ve diyagram formları ise bu fikir kıvılcımını adeta kendi bünyelerine katar ve onu besleyip saklarlar. Bizde daha sonra, onların ya ilk andaki yada beslenip büyümüş haldeki formlarını alıp tasarımımıza dahil ederiz. Peki bu kayıt mekanizması nasıl işler? Neden fikirleri not defterimize yazıvermek her zaman yeterli olmaz?
Zihnimiz parçalar arasında tamamıyla farkında olamadığımız kadar ilişkiler kurar ve tıpkı bir şifre kırıcı algoritma gibi bu ilişkilerden bir tutarlılığa ulaşmaya çalışır. Bu arayıştaki ufak tatminkarlıklar ortaya çıkan fikir tohumlarıdır. Bu fikirlerimiz en öz halleriyle zihnimizdedirler. Çünkü doğdukları yer orasıdır, dolayısıyla en iyi orada yaşayabilirler. Ancak zihnimiz devamlı olarak yeni fikirler bulacağından ve eski bulduklarını unutabileceğinden dolayı bu fikirleri kayda geçirmemiz gerekir. Ancak, bu kayıt esnasında istesek de istemesek de fikrin özünden bazı kayıplar meydana gelir. Bu kayıplara, soyut bir atmosferden(zihin) fiziksel/ somut bir atmosfere(bizim dünyamız) yolculuğun sancısı denebilir. Bunun sebebi zihinsel atmosferde parçalar arasında sayısını bilemeyeceğimiz kadar farklı türde ilişkiler oluşabilirken, somut parçalar arasındaki ilişki potansiyelleri nispeten sınırlıdır. Ancak yine de yapabileceğimiz şeyler var bu kaybı en aza indirebilmek ve fikrin zihindeki o mükemmel ve asıl haline referans veren bir kayıt yapabilmek için. İşte bu noktada kolajlar ve diyagramlar yardımcı araçlar olarak devreye girmektedir.
Peki fikirlerimizi kolayca yazmak dururken neden kolaj ve diyagramlara ihtiyaç var? Çünkü yazı aracı her türlü fikrin somut dünyaya yolculuğuna uygun olmayabilir. Tasarım sürecinde elimizdeki parçalar ile çok sayıda denemeler yaparız ve bu denemelerden en ideallerini organizasyonel bir bakış açısı ile tespit ederiz. Bu ilişkisel denemeler sadece yazı aracı ile kaydedilirse kendinden çok şey kaybederler. Bu, bir küp hacim hayalini kare çizerek kayıt etme yanılgısı gibidir.
Her fikrin en az kayıpla dünyamızda form bulacağı araç farklı olabilir: maket, diyagram, kolaj, yazı, resim, video …. Ve aklımıza gelebilecek her türlü araç.. Devamlı yeni fikirler üreten bizler fikirlerimize sahip çıkmalıyız. Çünkü çağımız fikirlerin savaştığı, kazandırdığı, kaybettirdiği bir çağ.(Hatta belki de dünya hep böyleydi) Fikirlerimize güzelce sahip çıkabilmemiz için onları nasıl kaydetmemiz gerektiğini öğrenmeliyiz. Mimarlık okulunda tüm insanların en azından bir yıl geçirmesi gerekliliğinin sebeplerinden birisi de bu.
Kolajlar ve diyagramlar daha organizasyonel fikirlerin kaydına uygun olduklarından dolayı mimarlık pratiğinde kullanılagelmekteler. Belki de bu yüzden hocalarımız bizleri ısrarla bunlara yönlendiriyor. Ancak şunu gözden kaçırmamalı ki kolaj ve diyagramların fikirlerin kaydı dışında ikinci bir yetenekleri daha var: Fikri evrimleştirme potansiyelleri. Bu potansiyel sayesinde başlangıçta göremediğimiz, ancak aslında başlangıç fikrimizde bir öz olarak varolan farklı potansiyelleri bize görünür kılmaları. Çünkü fikri bulduğumuzda ona hep bir açıdan bakıp donar kalırız. Ancak onu dünyamıza somut bir nesne haline getirdiğimizde ona farklı zamanlarda, farklı zihinlerle, farklı açılardan da bakabiliriz ve o bize bambaşka yönlerini gösterir.
Tüm bu sebeplerden dolayı kolajlar ve diyagramlar biz tasarımcıların organizasyon kabiliyetinin önemli yardımcılarıdır. Onlarla aramızdaki bu karşılıklı gerilimsel ilişkide son ürünün kime ait olduğu belirsizdir aslında. Ancak biz tasarımcı egomuzla o ürünü de sahipleniriz..
